INTERVIEW
120813 B.A.P “Dialect Rap? Even we thought it was culture shock”
Rookie idol group B.A.P is gaining popularity for their first mini album ‘NO MERCY.’
‘NO MERCY’ has a strong hip hop rhythm, mixed with rock, at a powerful 86 BPM, which is hard to find in recent male groups. This is giving a unique experience to music lovers.
In particular, Bang Yongguk showed a ‘Man’s Rap,’ participating in the composing of the song, increasing the musicality.
Recently, B.A.P has been showing a more relaxed image. They seemed confident about their attempt at a fresh change with this album.
In the performance of this album’s title song ‘MO MERCY,’ a Korean traditional drumming team is featured, and Korean traditional drumming is mixed in throughout the song. Because of this, this song sounds very familiar and intimate.
“It was Himchan’s idea. We were wondering what it would be like to mix in Korean traditional drumming with our music, and I think a really great song was born.” (Youngjae)
“Personally, I think this song is good and it’s intimate. I was hoping that the general public would not feel as if Korean traditional drumming was far off. The traditional drumming team that was featured in our performance are my friends. I tried to practice so I could play with the drummers, but it was really hard. I think I was comfortable because they were my friends.” (Himchan)
This song’s featured a dialect rap, called the ‘Man’s Rap,’ that aroused interest. The Kyungsangdo and Jeollado dialects were reborn through Bang Yongguk and Zelo’s rap.
“Since a long time ago, I tried making a song with a dialect rap. Originally, I made it as an intro song to ‘NO MERCY,’ but the feeling was good so it ended up being put in the actual song. A long time ago I heard MC Meta’s ‘Yes Yes Y’all’ and it was culture shock. From beginning to end, there was dialect, and I thought it was really cool. I remember being disappointed because the phrase ‘Yes Yes Y’all’ sounded like Japanese, so it didn’t pass the review of 3 broadcasting companies.” (Bang Yongguk)
Fans had fun watching Bang Yongguk, who is from Incheon, rap with a Kyeongsangdo dialect. They were surprised that he spoke so naturally with a Kyungsangdo dialect.
“Honestly, there were many difficulties with the Kyungsangdo dialect rap. I had never spoken with a dialect, so I didn’t know if I was saying it right, or if it even made sense. If Daehyun heard it and said it was fine, then it got OK-ed. (Laughs) I tried my best to get the correct intonation, but I don’t think it was quite right, so I’m a little disappointed.” (Bang Yongguk)
“I think it was pretty easy for me. I’m from Mokpo, so I was confident with the Jeollado dialect, especially because Yongguk hyung wrote it well. (Laughs) Expressing a dialect through rap was pretty new and interesting.” (Zelo)
“I think that if the music seems old, then the dialect will sound old, and if the music is cool, then the dialect will sound cool. I changes depending on how you express it. The standard dialect doesn’t have a groove to it. It doesn’t have a groove like English. There was definitely more groove with the dialect than there was with the standard dialect. I think it’s possible to make a song where the vocals use dialect if the melody is cool.” (Bang Yongguk)
‘NO MERCY’ is a fresh song, but it does not fully showcase B.A.P’s powerful, charismatic charms. When asked if they thought it was time to try a sweet love song, the members said that it was not the right time yet.
“Of course, if we’re thinking about what the general public wants, we may try it. But, for now, we still want to make music that will show B.A.P’s style. It’s important to communicate with listeners, but right now, we think it’s important to show B.A.P’s colors.” (Daehyun)
“Rather than deciding exactly when we will release a sweet song, we just want to release it when we are ready. We have a strong desire to show more of B.A.P’s colors. All of the members have the desire to widen our musical views. I think that, as opposed to ‘Warrior’ or ‘Power,’ this album provides more chances to interact with the fans.” (Jongup)
Nearing the end of the interview, B.A.P gave their goals for this album.
“We thought we would be able to communicate with more of the general public with this album. Since it is vacation, we hope to meet our fans often.” (Zelo)
“We do want to get 1st place, but we want to show more of our colors. Honestly, it’s not that we want to get 1st place, but we want to show a good image. Usually, we don’t do adlibs, but at the sound of the fans’ cheering, it just comes out naturally. We hope we can have fun together.” (B.A.P)
